Google plans for internet domination are well and truly underway as they go all out going after everyone they can think of, from investing in Zynga the company behind FarmVille on Facebook, purchasing Slide, a start up for making apps for social networks for $228 million and taking on the biggest social media platform, FaceBook.
It has been reported that Google are planning on a ‘social media’ site reportedly called ‘Google Me’. Google have confirmed little about this plan so details are very slim. But they’ve made it no secret that they are in direct competition with FaceBook.
But its not just the social gaming world they have their eye on, next on the list is a new GMail feature to make a phone call through your computer. The service is free in the USA and Canada until the end of the year. Not good news for Skype then.
Google dominate search, email, maps and online video as well as Orkut, a social network popular in Brazil and India, messaging tool Google Buzz and until very recently Google Wave which was scrapped.
All sounds like good stuff, especially for you. So whats all the fuss about?
Well once you consider how many investments they have and are making, how much they are buying up, how they are pushing to topple Facebook and entice their readers which is time, your time which also means money, it makes perfect sense that they are now along with Verizon pushing a ‘self interest’ proposal, a pay-to-play internet .
“Google — arguably the most powerful tech company in the world — has simply cashed in its neutrality chips, nearly fully compromised “Don’t Be Evil” corporate philosophy, and screwed us all. The irony is that the Internet we’ve become used to over the last couple decades has made Google and Verizon powerhouses in the first place.” – Scott Thill, AlterNet
So what does this all mean for you?
Well I dont understand much of the Google talk or most of the ins and outs so please feel free to correct me if I am wrong.
Simply put, you may very well start paying to use the internet, or more likely the sites you want to specifically view. It also means more control on what goes out to the general public meaning anything that goes against the grain and reporting on news that main stream media will not publish or inform you about will no doubt be shut down. Had this been in place a while back, most bloggers/websites and social netwoks would have failed and Skype would never have been started.
By trying to squeeze out Facebook and other social media outlets such as the gaming sites in the hope of accumilating a mass following, which means your time, your money, is a guarantee that they will profit enormously if the pay-to-play comes in to force.
Its simply all about the money, the control and placing restrictions on what you are viewing.
So, how much more willing will you be to surf the net if paying to do so?

Hi Maria Muir:
I came across your upbeat blog post. It is interesting. Google has taken the role of controling world wide web a long time ago. Now since they are in control they will keep it as long as they can, until their fall starts. This is the law of the nature. Thanks for providing more details, I like to know the latest. Word press likes unique information and after all it is from Google.
Well it is nice to know your writing. This is my first time, but I will
keep your site in my favorites.

My first reaction to seeing the title was the word “plan”. Google pretty much already HAS internet domination.
As for them creating a “pay based” version of a profitable net I would think that it wouldn’t work. They will surely generate a lot f revenue, but I would think that some very smart people would see this as their “chance” and create similar free versions to cut into their market share.
Of course if any company could have the sheer internet “power” to pull that off right now, it would be Google.
